April 23 is celebrated as World Book Day around the  World.

World Book Day 2019 is celebrated by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and other related organisations every year on the same day, 23 April.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations based in Paris.

World book Day 2019 is being celebrated worldwide to recognize the scope of books which are seen as a link between the past and the future, a bridge between cultures and generations.

World Book day is also called as the World Book and Copyright Day.

Celebrated as an occasion to promote the joy of reading the book.

The date 23 April is chosen by UNESCO to pay tribute to great literary figures which include Miguel Cervantes, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and  William Shakespeare,  who died on this day.

The date to celebrate World Book Day was finalized in the year 1995 in the UNESCO General Conference, held in Paris.

The day is celebrated to honor books and authors worldwide.

 

Purpose of World Book Day

Books are seen as a link between the past and the future, a bridge between cultures and generations worldwide and in every generation. And to give them recognition worldwide World book day is celebrated.

According to UNESCO, the idea for celebrating World Book Day is to encourage everyone to pick up books, especially the younger lot.

On 23rd April UNESCO and organisations representing publishers, booksellers and libraries select  a capital of a country  called as World Book Capital for a year to maintain the celebrations of books and reading.

Sharjah, UAE has been declared as the World Book Capital for the year 2019.

 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia will be the next World Book Capital for the year 2020.

This year 2019 is the is the 24th edition of World Book Day.

The theme for the 24th edition (year 2019) of the World Book Day is centered around celebrating literature and reading with a particular focus on enhancing and protecting indigenous languages.
